The Drowsy Chaperone is a Tony Award-winning comedy that debuted on Broadway in 2006. Written by a Canadian songwriting duo and their actor friends, the show is a marvelously clever pastiche of 1920s musical theatre styles/characterizations in the spirit of Cole Porter, Gilbert and Sullivan, Noel Coward, and George Gershwin. Rated PG by its production licensing company, The Drowsy Chaperone is fun family entertainment for all ages. Its story is told through the vivid imaginings of a lonely middle-aged theatre buff listening to his favorite musical. This show’s plot centers around the impending wedding of a young man and his beautiful bride-to-be, a famous vaudeville entertainer, at a grand country mansion. Throw in the bride’s scheming producer, an asipring yet daffy chorus girl, a pair of ridiculously inept gangsters, a Latin lothario, the forgetful hostess, her eternally-patient butler, the groom’s anxious best man, a prop plane pilot (!), and the title character — an aging, world-wise diva intent on stealing the spotlight while inadvertently falling in love herself — and you’ve got a show with more than plenty of laughs and heart. You’ll leave with an uplifting message about the power of music and the surprising strength of self!
